WHERE THE MUSIC STARTED

Long before I ever stood behind a controller or called myself DJ Carlos Rivas, music was already shaping who I was.

I grew up in Brooklyn, New York, during a time when music seemed to be everywhere. It came through apartment windows and car speakers. You heard it walking down the street. Summer meant open hydrants, people outside, neighborhood block parties and music carrying from one end of the block to the other.

Brooklyn didn’t give me just one kind of music. I grew up surrounded by salsa, freestyle, hip-hop, R&B, dance music, house and the sounds of New York’s Latin community. Different neighborhoods had different sounds, but somehow they all became part of the same soundtrack.

MY FIRST DJ WAS MY FATHER

Some of my strongest musical influences came from inside my own home. My father was a DJ, and I grew up listening to his mixes.

Before I understood BPMs, transitions, phrasing or any of the technical side of DJing, I understood something much simpler: music could change the feeling in a room.

I remember listening to the way my father put music together and being fascinated by it. Combined with everything I was hearing around Brooklyn, those experiences became a musical foundation that would follow me for the rest of my life.

FROM BROOKLYN TO PUERTO RICO

Later, I moved to Puerto Rico, and it gave me an entirely different relationship with music.

I wasn’t simply hearing Latin music anymore — I was experiencing the culture surrounding it. The parties. The gatherings. The dancing. The energy. The way music becomes part of everyday life.

I became more deeply connected to salsa, merengue, bachata, reggaeton and the constantly evolving sounds of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

But the music I discovered there didn’t replace the music I grew up with in New York. It became part of it.

TWO CULTURES. ONE SOUND.

When I play today, I’m bringing both places with me.

There’s the kid who grew up hearing music pouring into the streets of Brooklyn. There’s the son listening to his father’s DJ mixes. And there’s the person who later experienced Puerto Rican culture firsthand and developed an even deeper appreciation for the music behind it.

That’s why I don’t want DJ Carlos Rivas defined by one genre. My sets can move through salsa, freestyle, reggaeton, hip-hop, Latin, dance, house and throwbacks because that’s genuinely how I experienced music throughout my life.

THE DREAM I PUT ON HOLD

I eventually tried to pursue DJing myself, but life has a way of changing the plan.

Responsibilities grew. Equipment was expensive, time became limited, and other priorities took center stage. So DJing was put on hold.

Not because I stopped loving music. Life simply took me in another direction.

Years passed. I built a career, developed new skills and discovered other passions — especially technology, IT, website design and server programming.

But something happens with a passion you never really lose.

IT WAITS.

THEN I DECIDED TO COME BACK

After many years, I realized there doesn’t have to be an expiration date on a passion.

I didn’t need to keep wondering what would have happened if I had continued. I could simply start again.

So that’s what I’m doing — learning, practicing, building my setup, streaming, creating mixes, experimenting with different genres and improving one transition at a time.

I’m not trying to recreate an opportunity from years ago. I’m creating a new one.

MORE THAN MUSIC

DJing is only one side of who I am. During the day, I work full-time as an Operations Manager, where my world is logistics, people, systems, problem-solving and keeping an operation moving.

I’ve also spent years developing skills in technology. I work with IT, website design, servers and programming, and I enjoy building online projects that combine the technical and creative sides of what I do.

Even this website represents that. It isn’t simply somewhere to post my mixes. I’m building it into a community — a place where people can discover music, request songs, talk about what they’re listening to and even help build playlists and future DJ sets together.

In a strange way, all these different parts of my life finally make sense together.
